Solar and Wind Generation Register Significant Growth in the 1st Half of 2023

Solar and wind energy sources in Brazil demonstrated notable growth in centralized generation during the first half of 2023. According to the Monthly Energy Bulletin (BME) released by the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), solar generation recorded an impressive increase of 68%, while wind generation grew by 27% until the end of June.

This significant growth highlights the increasingly important role of renewable energy in the country's energy matrix. The expansion of these energy sources not only contributes to environmental sustainability, but also creates significant opportunities for investment and economic development.

Furthermore, the Monthly Energy Bulletin emphasized the possibility of further expanding generation from renewable sources, largely due to the holding of this year's first auction of electrical energy transmission facilities. In this auction, all offered lots were sold, with expected investments exceeding the impressive mark of R$ 16 billion, making this the largest auction in the segment in absolute numbers. The concession contracts arising from these acquisitions were signed in September.

The investments will cover several states, including Bahia, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Sergipe. These investments aim to improve the flow of surplus photovoltaic and biomass generation, contributing to a more efficient distribution of energy. Furthermore, the auctions will play a crucial role in expanding the transmission system in the South of the Northeast and North of the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.

These projects will not only strengthen the country's electrical infrastructure, but will also facilitate the procurement of substantial volumes of electrical energy from renewable sources. This includes wind and solar plants that stand out as drivers of Brazil's energy transformation.

The Monthly Energy Bulletin, produced by the Department of Information, Studies and Energy Efficiency (DIEE) of the National Secretariat for Energy Transition and Planning of the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), reflects the growing importance of renewable energies in the Brazilian energy panorama and highlights the country's ongoing commitment to a more sustainable and cleaner future.
