EU-CELAC Summit Meeting Discuss Green and Digital Transition Strategies

The scenario of strategic cooperation between the European Union and the Latin American and Caribbean region gained new impetus with the long-awaited meeting of the EU-CELAC Summit – a meeting between leaders of the European Union (EU) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States ( CELAC) to discuss political, economic and social issues of mutual interest. Leaders and representatives gathered to discuss key issues related to the transition to a greener, digital economy. Latin America and the Caribbean, responsible for 14% of world food production and home to around 50% of global biodiversity, is in a strategic position to promote food security and environmental sustainability. In this context, the European Union sees this partnership as a unique opportunity to strengthen political ties, encourage trade and investment and foster the development of more sustainable societies.

The discussions that took place during the Summit were comprehensive and fundamental to consolidate a common agenda, including aspects such as a renewed political partnership and the execution of investment strategies aimed at the ecological and digital transition. Commitment to human development, empowering young people and women, and supporting innovation and education also gained prominence in the Global Gateway proposal. Faced with global challenges, such as climate and digital issues, the strategic partnership between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean plays a fundamental role, reinforcing engagement in favor of human rights, democracy and international peace and security. The result of this meeting promises to positively influence the future of relations between the two regions and seek joint solutions to issues of global reach.

Bilateral and regional agreements are perceived as opportunities to boost economic growth and diversification, as well as promote sustainable development on both sides. The European Union is committed to collaborating with partners in Latin America and the Caribbean, creating an enabling environment for sustainable investments.

Global Gateway's proposal also aims to support human development, empower youth and women, and strengthen innovation and education. As part of the political commitment, the EU-LAC Global Gateway Investment Agenda (GGIA) was established, identifying opportunities for environmentally friendly and digitally-oriented investments.

This strategic partnership between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean is not restricted to economic issues, but seeks to address global challenges such as climate change and digital issues. Furthermore, both regions share firm democratic principles, human rights, and a joint advocacy for international peace and security. Combined, they make up nearly a third of the membership of the United Nations (UN), demonstrating strong support for international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
