Advances in Brazil towards a more efficient energy economy were highlighted at an event promoted by United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Under the theme “Energy Efficiency, Ecological Cooling for a Fair and Equitable Energy Transition”, the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) highlighted its policies focused on advancing energy efficiency in household appliances.
During the conference, MME's general coordinator of Energy Efficiency, Samira Sousa, emphasized Brazil's efforts to implement robust standards and passive cooling strategies. “We are advancing diligently, establishing standards and strategies that lead us towards a sustainable future”, highlighted Sousa.
The prominent Procel initiative, which recognizes the most efficient equipment in each category, was mentioned as part of the country's efforts to boost energy efficiency. The National Electric Energy Conservation Program, coordinated by the MME since 1985, has played a fundamental role in this advancement.
The MME also emphasizes the government's plans to regulate the energy efficiency of refrigerators, commercial air conditioners and fans in the coming years. Additionally, mandatory energy certification for buildings is on the cards, a move that is expected to boost demand for more efficient refrigeration and lighting equipment, as well as passive cooling techniques in the construction industry.
The event aimed to showcase the progress and leadership of the Latin America and Caribbean region in the transition to more sustainable cooling, setting the stage for the Conference of the Parties (COP) 28. Brazil's commitment towards more sustainable practices in the energy sector reflects a crucial step towards a greener and more ecologically conscious future.
Certification of household appliances in Brazil
The National Electric Energy Conservation Program (Procel) has stood out as an essential initiative to promote energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption in Brazil. Launched in 1985 by the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), Procel aims to encourage the manufacturing and consumption of more efficient household appliances, offering certification seals for products that meet strict criteria for energy efficiency and environmental impact.
The program plays a crucial role in guiding consumers towards choosing more economical appliances and equipment, helping them save energy and reduce costs associated with electrical consumption. Furthermore, through educational campaigns, Procel promotes awareness about the responsible use of energy, contributing to the preservation of the environment and the construction of a more sustainable future.
With its consistent and comprehensive action, Procel consolidates itself as a key player in the panorama of energy efficiency policies in Brazil, highlighting the country's commitment to reducing energy waste and promoting sustainable practices in the energy sector.
