Decarbonization of the Amazon and Clean Energy Will Be Themes of G20 Meetings

Between the 9th and 10th of September 2023, the 18th G20 Summit of Heads of State and Government, in New Delhi, India. In this important event, Brazil will play an active role in the search for effective solutions in the fight against deforestation and in the decarbonization of the Amazon, one of the greatest environmental challenges faced by the international community.

To anticipate the discussions, on July 20, Brazilian government authorities presented the Amazon decarbonization program at a meeting held in the city of Goa, also in India. The topic was addressed during the Seminar “Sustainable Mobility: Ethanol Talks”, which promoted dialogues on sustainable mobility and the use of biofuels.

One of the central aspects of the discussions is the dialogue between Brazil and the United States. The Brazilian Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, was in dialogue with the secretary of the US Department of Energy, Jennifer Granholm, to discuss joint strategies. In this sense, the two nations seek to cooperate in the search for solutions aimed at replacing oil-fired thermoelectric plants with renewable energy sources, as well as other measures to combat deforestation and promote the decarbonization of the Amazon.

In addition, other relevant topics will be addressed during the event, such as investments in transmission and generation of renewable energy, the exploration of biofuels and hydrogen, and carbon storage. The focus is on developing the fuels of the future, through international cooperation, incentives for innovation and carbon capture technologies.

During the discussions, Minister Silveira emphasized the importance of sustainable mobility and the production of renewable fuels. These initiatives aim not only to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also to promote the transition to a greener economy that is less dependent on fossil fuels.

With Brazil's active participation in these deliberations, the 18th G20 Summit is expected to be a significant milestone in global cooperation to address the most pressing environmental issues of our time, seeking a more sustainable future for generations to come. Commitment to strategic measures for the Amazon is of fundamental importance for the preservation of biodiversity, climate balance and the well-being of populations that depend on the region.
