Wind and Solar Energy Growth in China May Accelerate Reduction of Global Carbon Emissions

In a movement of continuous growth, China stands out in the expansion of solar and wind energy, driving what has been called the “green wave”. This trend holds out hope for limiting global carbon emissions more quickly and effectively. Through the significant increase in solar panel installations, it is estimated that the clean source generation capacity will grow by an impressive 85% by the year 2025. Currently, the Asian country is responsible for producing about 13.7 gigatons of CO2, but this green expansion trend points to a promising path towards reducing emissions and addressing global climate challenges.

China holds the position of the world's largest consumer of coal, especially for the purpose of producing electricity. Unfortunately, the use of this fossil fuel is responsible for a significant 69% portion of the country's carbon dioxide emissions. However, recent studies related to production, consumption and alternatives point to a promising scenario: the growing capacity of wind and solar energy generation in China has the potential to reverse the impacts of emissions and, consequently, combat issues such as rising temperatures. global.

Investing in clean and renewable sources is a strategic priority for China as it seeks to address the challenges of climate change and improve its environmental footprint. The rapid growth of wind and solar energy in the country demonstrates that there is a real commitment to transitioning to a more sustainable energy model.

The report carried out by Global Energy Monitor (GEM), highlights China's current installed "green energy" capacity, but also makes projections on what has been announced and is under construction over the next two years. Through the expansion of wind and solar energy capacities, China can significantly reduce its carbon dioxide emissions, contributing significantly to the mitigation of global warming. This approach aligned with cleaner and less polluting energy sources can be a crucial factor in containing the negative impacts of climate change and driving a more resilient and sustainable economy.

Since 2017, China has demonstrated a strong commitment to the expansion of wind energy, with projects under way that indicate continued and significant growth in the sector. In addition, solar energy is also in the focus of investments, with a forecast increase of 85% from current levels. The relevance of these initiatives is evidenced by the significant volume of investments made in 2022, totaling around U$ 500 billion in wind and solar energy, which reinforces the country's determination to drive the transition to clean and sustainable energy sources.

The report highlights that China's 2030 “green energy” targets must be achieved five years ahead of schedule. However, the study points out that highly polluting coal power plants are also growing in number, serving in part as backup for new wind and solar farms.

By driving the adoption of clean energy technologies, China is moving towards a more promising and environmentally conscious future. The increasing use of renewable energies such as wind and solar has the potential to significantly reduce dependence on coal and its adverse effects on the environment, becoming a key part of building a greener and more resilient society for future generations.
